SAIL SHANGRILA

Shangri La Crew Profile

Welcome aboard Shangri-La for your very own Caribbean sailing adventure. The name Shangri-La means paradise and that is what Greg and Carol prepare for you to experience while aboard for your sailing vacation.

Greg, Carol and their youngest son B.J. cruised in the Indian Ocean, visiting exotic places such as Madagascar and Mozambique. In 1997 they left Zululand Yacht Club, Richards Bay, South Africa, to cross the South Atlantic Ocean in their 36’ steel cutter, Carlin.

This trip was full of adventures, as they sailed to South America via St Helena, a highlight being a cruise 600nm into the Amazon River. After sailing through the Caribbean chain of islands they stopped at St Maarten, where they took a work break. Then it was on to Central America, spending time in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, before arriving in Florida.

After four years of living in Fort Lauderdale, where Carol worked with a yacht brokerage and Greg worked in the marine electrical engineering industry. They decided the big city life was not for them and moved back to the Caribbean and settled in the BVI, where they own a yacht brokerage, delivery and management company.

What started as a favor for friends four years ago, to help out when they needed crew for a charter boat in their fleet on short notice has become the perfect lifestyle for them. They now have a partner running the brokerage side of the business, while they get to take guests cruising the islands seeking that idyllic palm fringed bay, where the sea, the sky and the sand invoke that feeling of total tranquility.

Greg grew up in a family of nine children. After serving his time in the military, he spent time traveling overland through Africa and when he returned he joined BMW South Africa, as technical manager for a number of years. Greg's passion is sailing, he loves the opportunity to introduce people to sailing and is a patient and encouraging teacher, with a wealth of knowledge and many interesting stories to keep guests entertained.

Carol grew up in a small private hotel in Durban and loves entertaining and cooking. Her work experience has been varied. She owned and operated a landscape business and whilst cruising managed an internet business, crewed and hosted on a sunset cruise catamaran, sewed hurricane protection, to name a few. She also worked in the hospitality industry for many years and eventually opened her own catering business and restaurant in Richards Bay. Into all these activities she brought her enthusiasm, energy and love of dealing with people.

Having gained so much from the cruising lifestyle and with their contagious love of the sea, Greg and Carol will provide an unforgettable experience for you on Shangri-La. They look forward to welcoming you aboard Shangri-La.
